Anxiety Support Groups Can Help
I've never suffered from a serious anxiety of panic issue, but this is what I've heard: If you have never
had anxiety panic attacks, you can't possibly know what it's like. It stops you cold. It is the most gut wrenching,
awful feeling ever. It is sort of like the feeling of awfulness distilled.
An anxiety panic attack can make a normally rational person start to perspire, cause their heart to race,
And send them running home in a panic. It can be so crippling, as a matter of fact, that it can be hard to
get help.
Anxiety support groups are there to help and these groups can be found online, as well
as offline.
When I first started suffering from anxiety attacks, I couldn't even make it to my anxiety support
group. I was becoming a shut in. Every time I would leave the house, something would trigger me. Sometimes, it
would be a routine worry. I would think about whether I had left the stove on, for example. Soon, however, my
idle worry would turn into panic. If I tried to goto anxiety support groups, I would worry about what people
would think about me. I would get so nervous that I wouldn't even be able to make it all the way there. Soon, I
was only leaving the house when I absolutely had to.
Fortunately, there was an online anxiety support group message board. Some
people are surprised how many people were out there who have the same issues and concerns. We frequantly feel
we're alone, but we're not. Many people have exactly the same problems. There are literally thousands of
people posting on these boards every day.
It wasn't quite as good as being able to meet in person, but having that anxiety support group really
helped me. I was able to talk to some of the most supportive, nurturing people I had ever met. Some of them
were currently in the same situation that I was in, but other ones had successfully recovered. All of them were
willing to lend a helping hand.
Soon, I was able to actually go to the local anxiety support group meeting. I was so happy to make it
there without being overcome by panic. Once I took that step, I was on the road to recovery.
Going to a therapist two times a week is a direction that some follow. Some use medications, but that should
never be done withouit the Doctor's supervision. It may take months to even start to feel
better, but just knowing you're moving in the right direction can really help to hang on.
With the help of the anxiety support group and the therapy, I was able to figure out what was making me
so anxious and unhappy. And one step at a time, I was able to get my life back together.
Have you ever stopped to consider how each person copes with stress in a different way? This is especially
interesting in office situations where people come from a variety of backgrounds. There are some people who deal
with stress by over eating, others do not eat anything. Some people lose sleep and others become short
tempered.
These symptoms are usually short lived and disappear when the stress causing situation is taken care of. There
are some people however that find everyday situations to be powerful stress producing situations.
The normal stresses of life become a major focus, to the point that they cannot function. This
is when stress becomes an anxiety disorder.
There are many treatment options for people that suffer from anxiety disorders. A treatment modality that is
very effect for many people is anxiety support groups. These groups are made up of people who share the experience
and understanding of anxiety issues and disorders. They are there to help themselves move forward and to help the
others in their group move forward.
Attending an anxiety support group is a way for a person to feel empowered because they are helping themselves.
The prospect of attending anxiety support groups can be very stressful for most patients, group
settings being a very common anxiety producer for many people. However if the person is able to make a good
connection with the leader of the anxiety support groups or a member or two, then the stress of attending is
reduced. A supportive, understanding, and insistent therpist can also be a great help.
There are many forms of anxiety. In larger communities the anxiety support groups are able to specialize in
different areas of anxiety so that people are able to concentrate on their particular needs. This has benefits as
well as detriments. The benefits are that it is helpful for the person to realize that they are not alone in the
way they feel.
The detriment is that if the members of the group are not motivated to change they may reinforce each other to
not dealing with their anxiety in a healthy manner. In this case it may be best to find an entirely different
support group. As with all self help groups it is important to have a monitor that is able to steer the group
process forward and not to let members ruminate on their differences.
The work that people do in the anxiety support groups can help them to live fuller lives because they can get
the help and support and understanding necessary to experience new and different things.
While there are many good anti-anxiety medications that are available through prescriptions, it is always best
to try to get through the problem without such medications, if possible. For people with severe
anxiety disorders they may need to remain on the medication long term in order to function well in society.
