As some of our other articles have mentioned, there are herbal and natural remedies for anxiety available that may be beneficial as part of a holistic approach to dealing with panic attacks on an on-going basis or as needed.

One of the best herbal remedies for panic attacks involves aromatherapy.  There are many essential oils that are calming and soothing, and one of the best is lavender. If you suffer from panic attacks or live with someone who does you should never be without a bottle of lavendar!  Sprinkle some on a handkerchief to sniff when you are out or whenever you need to feel calm.

Additional oils that may be beneficial include: clary sage, geranium, jasmine, patchouli, peppermint, rose, and sweet orange. Try them in the bath or in massage oil, or you can place these oils in a diffuser or herbal vaporizer to create a soothing atmosphere.

An herbal remedy designed specifically for reflief from stress and anxiety that you may wish to try is PureCalm which combines the soothing properties of Melissa Officinalis, with those of Lavender and Passiflora Incarnata. For severe anxiety and panic symptoms, as well as depression, you may want to combine this with MindSoothe. MindSoothe combines St John's Wort, widely known as a herbal treatment for depression and anxiety disorders, with the calming herb Passiflora.

Another interesting herbal remedy is Bach Rescue Remedy.  It is a dilution of flower essences developed by Edward Bach. The flowers involved are cherry plum, clematis, impatiens, rock rose, and star of Bethlehem.  Bach Rescue Remedy has been found by many to be effective in treating stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, especially in emergencies, though the medical community maintains that it has no more effect than a placebo.

There are several other herbal remedies for panic attacks that can be taken in tablet, tincture, or tea form.  Valerian and passion flower both soothe the nervous system and help you get a good night’s sleep.  Kava-kava and St. John’s Wort have also proved successful in treating anxiety.  Drinking kava tea or chamomile tea can be very relaxing.

Herbal remedies for panic attacks can be very effective, but should always be used with care, and dosage requirements should be followed precisely.  If you are taking any prescription medication you should consult your physician and pharmacist before using herbal remedies. Some prescription medications (such as MAOIs like Nardil, Parnate, and Marplan) can react unfavorably with some herbs, foods, pain relievers, or other over-the-counter medications.

Note: you should avoid the following oils when pregnant: Basil, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Fennel, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavendar, Marjoram, Myrrh, Rose, Rosemary, Sage, and Thyme.

If you have epilepsy you should avoid these oils: Camphor, Fennel, Hyssop, Sage, and Rosemary.

There are other techniques to use for anxiety and panic, one of which is the Panic Away Method.
