More About Anti-Anxiety Medications

Our world becomes more exciting and technologically advanced on a daily basis, but this exciting new world also seems to involve increased pressure and stress. It comes as no surprise that people are suffering from anxiety and depression in ever increasing numbers. 

What causes anxiety? Recent research has identified the serotonin transfer gene (SERT,) which is involved in the manufacture of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, as being associated with anxiety disorders. People with the short form of this gene are more likely to develop anxiety disorders and depression.

Do you have any of the symptoms commonly associated with anxiety? Those who suffer from panic attacks and anxiety disorders may experience some of these commonly reported symptoms: shortness of breath, pounding or rapid heartbeat, dizziness or light headedness, trembling or shaking, hot and cold flashes, sweating, and a terrible sense of dread or fear.

Fortunately, over the past decade there has been greater recognition of the problems caused by stress, depression, and anxiety. There are now many alternatives available to relieve the symptoms of anxiety. Some involve natural methods and healthier lifestye choices, and some involve the use of medication.

There are many natural methods of dealing with anxiety that do not involve the use of medications, either herbal or prescription. One natural (non-medication) approach to coping with the numerous symptoms of anxiety would be to participate in counseling with a psychologist or psychiatrist, or to join a support group with others who have the same or similar problem. Sometimes merely realizing that you are not alone in your battle can help you develop the strength to conquer this challenge.

Some other natural methods include: proper and adequate nutrition, daily vigorous exercise (within your physical limitations,) daily meditation or relaxation practice, improving self-image, adopting a simpler and less stressful lifestyle, and the support of family and friends. These natural methods may also be used in conjunction with medication.

The recent focus on anxiety disorders has resuted in the development of several anti-anxiety medications. For those whose lives have become unmanageable and who are unable to find another way, anti-anxiety medications, both over-the-counter herbal remedies and prescription medications, have been a source of relief.

Many of those who decide to try medications for anxiety and its symptoms make the choice to try herbal remedies rather than prescription medications. One reason for this decision is to avoid the possibility of addiction while finding a natural way to restore the neurotransmitter loss associated with anxiety.

Some unfortunate individuals have such extreme and debilitating symptoms that they cannot perform their normal daily routine due to the frequency and severity of anxiety symptoms. Herbal remedies are usually insufficient to alleviate their difficulties and there is often no other choice than to take prescription anti-anxiety medication.

Anti-anxiety medication deals with the symptoms experienced and, depending on the medication used, should allow the patient to experience relief rapidly.  It is also important to know that it may not be necessary, or desireable, to take anti-anxiety medication indefinitely.

Commonly prescribed drugs at this time include Xanax, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Paxil, Alprazolam, and Buspar. As with all things, the most effective drug will vary with the individual. It may take a few weeks of trying first one and then another to locate the right one for any individual patient.  The proper medication should result in genuine feelings of relaxation and the ability to focus again.  This is the ideal result that every one who deals with severe anxiety is seeking.

Some of the most common side effects of these anti-anxiety medications are drowsiness and blurred vision. If you take any prescription medication it is important to determine how the drugs will affect you before you attempt to drive a car or operate machinery. There may also be other short or long term side effects from these medications, some potentially severe. 

We are all unique and what affects one person in one way mey affect another person quite differently. You should discuss all of these issues with your physician if these medications are prescribed for you.
