Exercise For Children
Things are different for my boys, compared to my own younger days. When I was young people weren't so safety
concious as they are today. We had wide-open spaces to play in and I would often be gone all day with my
friends playing in the fields and streams around my home.
Most days I made it home for lunch, but this was only because my mom would come looking for me. I was never
sitting still, and I always got plenty of exercise. My boys aren't as lucky, as we live in the middle of
a small city, and it is just not safe enough for them to be outside running around all day. (Actually, it's
probably about as safe it it ever was, be today parents are far more aware of the dangers.)
Another thing to look at is that PE is being cut back for the kids. More and more schools don't let them run and
play at recess so our kids get a lot less exercise than they used to. This is why we, as concerned parents,
have to think of what kind of exercise for children is available.
Walking is a good, basic exercise that can be done anytime. We love to take walks, and this is one of the best
ways to get some exercise for the kids, and the adults. They love to go anywhere with us and this also
gives them a chance to explore the neighborhood and to get to know those who live around us. If you can keep
up with your kids then running together is even better.
This also is a great way for them to experience the four seasons. They love to watch the trees change
and blossom each year. As an exercise for children walking is great, however, make sure you are walking
in a safe place, and make sure you know what to do if something goes wrong (for example, your kid falls and whacks
a knee.)
If you can’t go on the long walks or runs, or you know your area is just not safe enough, there's plenty of kid
friendly exercise that can be had in the house. For example: my kids love the Dance Dance Revolution series of video games
and, while I'm a hopless clod, they can keep up with the game on the hardest difficulty (and work up quite a
sweat.)
You may have seen these games in the arcade. In home you can get a dancepad to go along with the game and get
lots of exercise, in the home, even if it's raining. It's a girl friendly game, as well.
If you have the time you might want to join your local YMCA. Most communities have these, and they have a lot of
options for exercise for children. The whole family can find things to do there, and they are quite often priced
just right so you don’t have to break your budget. Many other gyms are also family friendly.
No matter what you do for exercise for your children, the most important thing is that you start them young so
that it is something they think is a normal part of life. This may help keep them active for years to come, and
good health is one of the most important lessons you can teach them.
