With gift cards and certificates you don't have to wait for a package to be delivered. When you buy the card or certificate a code is emailed to you. Then you print it, put it in a nice envelope, and hand (or send) it to... If you want a physical card sent then that option is sometimes available, but you'll have to wait a few days for delivery.

There are no shipping charges, unless you're having a real certificate sent to someone. Frequently there are no taxes, either. And that hard to buy for person gets to pick their own darn gift! :)
